
Jaun Elia
Jaun Elia (1931–2002) was a prominent Urdu poet, writer, and intellectual known for his distinctive voice in modern Urdu poetry. Born in Amroha, India, he migrated to Pakistan after the Partition of India and spent most of his life in Karachi. He was deeply involved in literary, philosophical, and historical studies, and was fluent in multiple languages including Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and English. Despite writing for decades, his first poetry collection Shayad was published in 1991, followed by Yaani, Gumaan, Lekin, and Goya, many of which were compiled and published later in his life or posthumously. Jaun Elia’s poetry is known for its themes of existentialism, loss, love, and self-reflection, often expressed with sharp honesty and intellectual depth. Apart from poetry, he also worked as a translator, scholar, and editor, contributing to various literary journals and encyclopedic projects.
